Dina Parise-2015 IHRA Pro Mod World Champion: Anatomy of a Championship

They say ‘seasons change’. For the Dina Parise Racing team, that term could not ring more true at this moment!

The nuts and bolts of it:

This past weekend at the IHRA World Final (at Memphis International Raceway) was the culmination of a wild season for DPR. The 2015 season was not only challenging and eventful (sometimes not in a good way) it was at times downright frustrating. The team never relented and it paid off. In the end it was all worth it. Dina Parise clinched the championship and is now the 2015 IHRA, Crower Pro Mod World Champion!

“The nuts and bolts of it is that we are a small team,” Stated Parise. “We are thankful for everything we have and for the support we receive. But in reality, we ran on not a ‘shoestring’ budget, but an ‘aglet’ budget! Regardless of budget we accomplished what we set out to do and we are proud of that. Proud for our accomplishments and proud for the marketing partners that have supported us and believed in us!”

The good, the bad and the ugly:

Fielding a new car is not always as easy as it would seem. DPR debuted Stella the Cadillac CTS-V Pro Mod at IHRA Nitro Jam (Bradenton Motorsports Park) back in April. As prepared as they thought they were, they seemed to be plagued with issues. From minor to major and everything in-between. One of the major issues for Dina was comfortability. “I was having a hard time becoming one with the Stella,” Said Parise. “You can sit in a shop to make adjustments until you are blue in the face. Until you are actually in the car and running it, you really cannot get a feel for certain things.” The team made several changes to the inner ‘cockpit’ until she became comfortable.

In May, the team detonated their ‘#1’ motor. Although they did have a spare (from Andrew’s 53 Pro Mod) it was not nearly up to the standards of the #1 motor, yet the team had to utilize it. Upon sending the #1 motor out for repair, it was subsequently damaged further due to mishandling by the shipping company. Insult to injury. On a side note, the team was left paying for the additional damage as well, because the shipping company is refusing to take responsibility.

In August the IHRA Nitro Jam event at US 131 began with the addition of Quain Stott to the team! It also began with bits of unexpected issues and the issues did not cease. The culmination of the ‘Murpy’s Law’ factor was Dina running long to the ‘beach’ (sand pit). (more about it here: http://dinapariseracing.com/dina-parise-racing-runners-up-runs-long-to-points-leader )In true racer fashion, Parise exited her Cadillac Pro Mod and asked Marc Kinton (IHRA Safety Crew member) “What did I run? How’s Stella?” to which he replied, “Be quiet and listen to me. I’m your boss right now. Hush up and listen. Helmet off! Let’s go!” She complied. Not that she was given a choice. Thankfully for the most part Stella was really none the worse for wear. The team returned to Pennsylvania thinking they would not make the race the following week at Grand Motorplex. Andrew refused to give up. He thrashed all week knowing they needed to hang on to the points lead. In the 11th hour, the team (Dina and Andrew) loaded up and headed to Canada.

DPR was shorthanded at the Grand Bend event. Andrew was the lone crew member left to do it all. Quain (Stott) was there tuning and had his own job to attend to. Stella was running well. Quain was masterful at getting the tune-up where it needed to be. The most unfortunate piece to this puzzle was driver error. “I dropped the ball.” Said Parise. “I made costly errors that cost us the win light. I cannot run from it, all I can do is take it in and learn from it and move forward.”

Before the finals in Memphis, the team made a stop at (IHRA sanctioned) South Georgia Motorsports Park for a quick test session the Saturday. Yet again… there it was … ‘Murphy’s Law’ lurking in the shadow of the DPR pit area. Saturday morning they awoke to begin the test session but it was not to be. Andrew became violently ill with the flu. “Normally, I would just shake it off.” Stated Andrew Parise. “That day I could not move. It was as if I was run over by my rig.” The team stayed over to test Sunday. Andrew was still ill but did what he could to have Dina get a few passes in. Dina and Andrew planned on heading to Memphis on Monday. That was not to be either. Dina became the next victim of the raging flu overtaking DPR. Thankfully racing in Memphis was not to begin until Friday. It gave them both a chance to recuperate.

Lastly comes IHRA World Finals at Memphis International Raceway. As had happened all year, Mother Nature was the thorn in everyone’s side. Rain. Due to the rain, the racers were left with only two qualifying shots on Saturday. All teams seemed to take it in stride.

The championship came down to a 31 point difference between Dina Parise and Bill Lutz. Dina took the win light in the first round of eliminations via a peddle fest against Robert Patrick. Next up was Bill Lutz and Ruben T. The DPR team waited anxiously at the top end of the track to observe the outcome. Ruben pulled his chutes, Bill had not. Bill did not get the win light. It was over. That was the moment Dina learned she did clinch the IHRA Crower Pro Mod World Championship. “The first thing Quain said to me was ‘Welcome to the (champion) club’,” Said Parise “What an honor to have those words spoken.”

“It was a tough year,” Said (Andrew) Parise. “From engine changes to just crazy issues we really did not perform as well as we wanted to or should have. But with lady luck on our side we pulled off the Championship. Was it pretty? Nope! But like many others in the past that won in a similar fashion to how we did, it feels pretty damn good. I am very proud of this team not only for winning but for never giving up. I made some bad calls this year that cost us not to win a couple races but everybody still supported me. I can tell you for 2016, Stella will be running 150% for another championship.”

“Never give up. If you dream it, give it a shot.” Said Parise. “We came close to walking away on a few occasions. But the support of our marketing partners, our fans, friends, family and fellow racers was what kept us going. It was quite a journey. What an unbelievable outcome. We could not ask for anything better. Well, maybe just to repeat it next year? We will certainly work toward that!”

Thank you, Thank you very much:

DPR would like to thank Quain Stott (and Cynthia) for assisting the team. His capabilities as a tuner are second to none. Cynthia’s attention to detail keeps things organized. His expertise and assistance pushed the team to win this championship. Next thank you goes to Butch Branzelle for his efforts as crew member all year. His dedication to the team was just another piece to that championship puzzle. In addition, a thank you goes out to Charlie Saccoccio and Jody Lupton for pitching in as crew members!

Real men wear TuTu’s:

On a side note, a new tradition was born during the championship process. Quain, Butch and Andrew showed off their best dance moves while wearing TuTu’s to the line! Some things you just cannot un-see! Even Louis Floquet of Crower joined in the fun!

The companies that help to make it happen:

Dina Parise Racing Runners up, runs long to points leader!

The term ‘from hero to zero’ may just apply to the wild weekend the Dina Parise Racing team endured at US 131 Motorsports Park for the IHRA Northern Nationals. If it could happen it did. But frankly this hard working ‘grass roots’ team has seen and been through quite a bit in the past few years. They tend to be like a Timex… ‘Take a lickin’ and keep on tickin’!

Upon arrival the DPR team began working on Stella to prepare her for a quick test session on Friday. As small as this team is, they take their maintenance program very seriously. Andrew Parise is a stickler for everything being race ready before arrival at an event. Of course, anyone familiar with drag racing knows; always expect the unexpected. On that day, there was a plethora of unexpected issues that needed attention. The frustration being compounded by the fact that the Parise’s were having issues by no fault of their own. By 6PM Friday the team was able to make a test it. One is always better than none.

Rain has certainly been a mitigating factor in the 2015 IHRA Crower Pro Mod series. The President’s Cup Nationals fueled by Sunoco was concluded at US 131 Motorsports Park during the Northern Nationals presented by Aeromotive. Competition had been postponed due to Tropical Storm Bill back in June.

Once again (you may guess what’s coming next) it rained on Friday and there were only 2 (of 3) qualifying rounds completed for this event. The first of the two came very late on Friday evening. Again Saturday morning, rain. Apparently Mother Nature is at a point in her life where she is needing some mood altering drugs or perhaps just a nice bottle of vino and some chocolate. Either way, her moods are wreaking havoc on our racing schedule!

In round 2 of qualifying Dina Parise ran Billy Harper in the Presidents Cup Final. Harper took the win with a 5.963 at 245.50 mph over Parise’s 6.244 pass at 197.98 mph. “It was surely a tough loss.” Stated Dina Parise. “Twice a bridesmaid, and never a bride. My second final this season and I did not do my job. I for sure was not on my ‘A’ game with Stella. I was holding back a bit. But in the scheme of things we are certainly making progress, much due to our work with Quain (Stott). I have a kick butt hard working team. I can’t thank them enough for all they do.”

With Parise’s 6.24 pass it was enough to get her into the field. She was to face #1 qualifier Steve Matusek in round 1 of eliminations. Parise knew she needed to be on her game for this run. Quain Stott had been stepping up on the tune up bit by bit. Stella left the line well. She was on a good pass. For sure headed in the right direction tuning wise. Matusek took the win with a 5.937 at 245.50 mph over Parise’s 6.136 at 230.41 mph.

This race did not end at the stripe however. Parise engaged in her normal ‘shutdown’ procedure but all did not go as planned. Her chutes did not deploy as they should and getting Stella to come to a full stop was more of a task than she bargained for. “Well, let’s just say I took a trip to the beach and no bikini’s were required!” Stated Dina. “Wow, certainly not how I wanted to end this weekend. I pulled the chutes but I could not feel them at all. I knew it was going to be rough getting her slowed down. The pit kept getting closer. Before you knew it I was playing in the sandbox! Crap! I knew it was going to leave a mark on my beautiful Stella. But frankly it beats the alternative! On a positive note, she was picking up all weekend. That Quain, he’s a keeper!” She smiles.

In true racer fashion, Parise exited her Cadillac Pro Mod and asked Mark Kinton (IHRA Safety Crew member) “What did I run? How’s Stella?” to which he replied, “Be quiet and listen to me. I’m your boss right now. Hush up and listen. Helmet off! Let’s go!” She complied. Not that she was given a choice.

The DPR team would like to thank IHRA Safety Crew for their quick response and care taken with both Dina AND Stella. Taking such care in the removal of Stella from her trip to the ‘beach’ has kept costs down for DPR to get her turned back around and back to racing form as quick as possible. The team also would like to thank everyone from the other drivers, announcers to the fans for their support and positive words.

“I realized she was going in (to the beach).” Stated Andrew Parise. “As long as I knew the shiny side was up, we were all good. I knew she was in good hands. Butch (Branzelle) and I got up there and she waved to me (from inside the ambulance) to let me know she was ok. She was cracking jokes in the ambulance. Ya, that’s my wife. She will be here all week, be sure to tip your waitress.” He shakes his head.

This DPR team is coming together. The changes made are purely positive and regardless of the slight mishap this team is on an upward slope. Dina Parise has just taken over the IHRA Crower Pro Mod Points Lead! She is currently 52 points ahead of Bill Lutz and 53 points ahead of Ruben Tetsoshvili. So yes, for a moment, it is back to hero! But if you know anything about Dina Parise you know this; she is a fierce competitor and she will not take anything for granted. She is well aware that this will be a fight to the finish.

“I cannot thank my crew enough” Stated Dina “My husband Andrew, Butch Branzelle and of course Quain Stott. We are a good team together. I am learning a lot from Quain. Trying to take it all in. A big thank you to Cynthia as well. She does not even realize how helpful she is!”

The DPR team continues to push the envelope in every way. From performance to detail this team acknowledges and does it all. Stella sparkles because of the products provided by USA Auto Supply and CRC Auto. She runs well and safely due to products such as DJ Safety, NGK, Speedwire Systems, Hoosier, Motorsports Unlimited and LAT Racing Oils. Dina Parise Racing joins forces with Quain Stott !

‘Change is the law of life. And those who look only to the past or present are certain to miss the future.’ John F. Kennedy.
Many tend to confuse change with unhappiness. That is not always necessarily the case. In many instances progression is what prompts change. The want to succeed and the need for progression are the catalyst for change. Therefore change is good.
Change for the Dina Parise Racing comes in the form of the addition of Quain Stott to the team. For those of you not familiar with Quain and his accomplishments, where have you been? Please come out from the rock you have been residing under and read on!
The term ‘run what ‘cha brung’ certainly was a motto for Quain in its purest sense. His dedication to this sport led him to be a: 13 time National Event winner, 14 consecutive IHRA Pro Modified Top 10 finishes (many in the top 5), and 2006 IHRA Pro Modified World Champion. He was voted #11 on Competition Plus’ Pro Mod All-Time Top 20 Drivers list. If you ask Quain what accomplishment he is most proud of, he will tell you it was being named Car Craft Magazine 2001 All-Star Driver of the year. Not his favorite because he was named driver of the year but his favorite due to the fact that this recognition came from the fans. They voted for him and that speaks volumes.
“I am honored to have Quain as a part of our team! “ Stated Dina Parise. “We work well together, and he believes in our program. Besides, it’s nice to have a buffer between Andrew and myself. He tends to try to drive the car for me.” She laughs.
With change comes letting go as well. Within this process the DPR team has parted ways with long time Crew Chief Dave Jordan. Again, do not confuse change with unhappiness. Dave has moved on to pursue new opportunities and expand on his own business. “Dave was an integral part of this DPR team for many years. We thank him and wish him nothing but the best!” Stated Andrew Parise. “We have a lot of history together. His part in this team will not be forgotten.”
Although it is late in the season, this change is coming at a pivotal time for DPR. Dina Parise is currently 6 points behind Ruben Tetsoshvili in the IHRA Nitro Jam Crower Pro Mod Series yet only 100 points separates the top 5 drivers. As it stands there are three full races left and Parise has yet to run her Semi-Final round against Chuck Mohn ; the continuation of the IHRA Maryland International Raceway Presidents Cup race that was rained out after round one of eliminations where Parise took out points leader Tetsoshvili. (http://dinapariseracing.com/dina-parise-leaves-ihra-presidents-cup-on-a-high-note  )
“Admittedly it has been a long bumpy, frustrating road.” Stated Dina Parise. “We have had a bit of ‘new Cadillac blues’ and have had some nutty issues. But we are fighters and we refuse to give up. We are a family team. We have worked hard to get where we are. Blood, sweat, tears and yes meatballs! Life gives you lemons…. Toss them aside and make Gravy and Ravioli! I cannot thank my husband Andrew enough for all he does. He’s a one man band. But he gets it done. It’s a labor of love on all accounts. Ya it’s sappy but true. If you tell him I said it, I will deny, deny, deny! ” She smiles

A Pug’s need for speed!

Woofin’ at ya my good peeps! It has been wayyyy tooo long since I ‘pawed’ my last blog! Mom and Dad have been hogging the computer. Well, mostly Mom!

I am woofingly happy to say that our Dina Parise Racing team has been on the road and attending the IHRA Nitro Jam series! Did you know that the Pro mod class in IHRA is sponsored by Crower Cams & Equipment ? Sure are! And since I AM the DPR PR Pug I am good at giving a plug, well that is as long as there is a treat involved!

Mom and Dad have been taking me to some really cool places! We went to Virginia Motorsports Park (VMP) and I got to see all my friends! Well, I make friends wherever I go! I even learned how to stage my Jr. Dragster Stroller!

Bella staging3

We have been to South Georgia Motorsports Park (SGMP) , Bradenton Motorsports Park and Palm Beach International Raceway (PBIR)! I made friends in all those places!

Being the PR Pug I have an important job! Mom and Dad think THEY run the show…. Woof! Nope! It’s all me!

So, let me catch you up! Did you know that SGMP is now an IHRA track? Wooofff! That means I will get to go back next season!

It was super hot in Bradenton. Don’t these people know I am all furry? Whew! I did get to watch the team work on Mom’s Cadillac. Her name is Stella. Almost like my name! I was in the pit in my Jr. Dragster stroller and I saw lots of people there! Some wanted autographs, and some were helping the DPR team to work on Stella! Not sure what was happening, but they were very dirty when all was said and done! I would be in trouble if I got that dirty! I know ’cause once I played in a mud puddle! It was fun! Then Mom gave me a bath. I love taking a bath!

Bath2

Next we went to PBIR. I saw a real live Alligator! I didn’t get close because I think he would have eaten me as a snack on a Ritz Cracker! I met a new fur friend too. His name is Boss! He told me that his Dad (Cale Aronson) had a crash in his car. I’m woofin’ and praying that he feels better soon! I know that Boss will cheer him and Tinzy (Boss’ Mom) up! That’s what us fur kids do! Now, I do not know how to mail stuff, but I bet you do! You can send Cale ‘Get Well’ cards to make him feel better! Keep reading for that address!

Mom did woofin’ good at PBIR! I could hear the fans cheering as I chewed my bone! And my new human friend Les (Mahew) made a cool video of Mom too! But, he forgot to ask me to appear in it. I thought I was the star!?!

From PBIR we came back to Pennsylvania. That’s where we live now! Mom takes me to work with her at Andi-Con Performance. I like it because Becky the Fed Ex lady gives me cookies! Then I take a nap….. Don’t you just love naps and cookies? I would help Mom and Dad work, but being this cute is tiring!

They tell me that soon we will go to Cordova International Raceway (CIR) with IHRA Nitro Jam! May 29th and 30th! I’m super excited to go there because I have never been! That means MORE new friends!

Have you ever been to a Drag Race? It’s cool because us fur kids can come along! I worry though when I see the fans bring their fur kids. I am lucky, I have a nice cool house on wheels to stay in. But their fur kids look very hot! I bet they would rather be home in the cool air! I know I would! And why do peeps leave us fur babies in the car when it’s hot out? Don’t they know we can’t work the cool air? I watch the news with Mom and she said some of my furry peeps died from being left in a hot car! If I ever see that, I will bite their ankles until they let their fur kid out of the car! Whew! I feel better that I woofed that out!

So, I hope I will be back soon to let you all in on the DPR stuff! I’m tired now. Time for another nap!

Don’t forget about my friend Boss’ Dad! Here is the address for you to send stuff! Let’s all cheer him up and wish him a woofin’ speedy recovery! I heard he love Minion’s (whatever they are) !

Send stuff to: Jackson Rehabilitation Hospital
2nd Floor Room 252 Cale Aronson
                            1611 NW 12th Avenue
                              Miami, FL 33136

Did you know you can also donate? YES! Help ‘Bridge the Gap’ for the Aronson family! Visit : http://godspeedministry.com/ws/?p=1287 For information!

I will see you all at top end!

See Ya 2014-Dina Parise Racing

Well, 2014 is over. It has been one tough and long year for us (Dina Parise Racing) and many others. It was a year that we lost many friends, a family member and racers. It was one of those years that just seems like you are driving through thick fog. But like they say, you have to take the bad with the good. This year was one giant road trip for me, from North Carolina to New York to Pennsylvania to somewhere else. I have a new respect for long haul truckers. We can finally call a state home. The state of  Pennsylvania.

I grew up old school ; I  say thank you, I open doors for a lady, I will give up my seat. Those days are long gone in many areas but the people here in Pa still live by old school values. The first time someone said good morning to me, I was like, ‘What do you want? You talking to me?’ It took me a couple days but I realized that I am home. It was a nice change. I do miss the food in NY but we are close enough to Maryland which has good restaurants, but the boss said we have to go on a diet after Christmas. She said she wants a fit backup boy. Hmmmm… I guess that was a dig on my current look.

IHRA, announced the come back of Pro Mod for 8 races at the PRI Show. We attended the meeting in the media room at PRI and it was a packed house. The management team did a great job of bringing back Pro Mod to its grass roots with a full time sponsor, Crower. I think this is going to be a great program with a large turnout. I know everybody will be watching as well as commenting. We are sure it will be run well, but just like any other series perfection takes time. They have a series sponsor (Crower) that has been in business for over 40 years, and a management team that is going above and beyond and have booked some of the best tracks around. I shouldn’t have taken this year off, I might have to move the Bosses pedals in her car (OK, don’t tell her that). With IHRA,NHRA and PDRA it is going to be a great year of Pro Mod racing. We will be focusing on IHRA and PDRA, we don’t have the points to enter NHRA nor will we spend a year obtaining them running divisional races.

So, we have been busy working on the new shop (Andi-Con Performance), well I have been busy not sure what Dina has been doing. Andi-Con is coming together well and will open this month. It is going to be a great new adventure for us. I will be working side by side with Dina, racing together, traveling together. What the hell did I get myself into?  The shop is coming together nicely, the boss has her office, smart TV, new computer, personal heater and I have white hair. I need a dye job, my hair is white not gray anymore. It is a lot of work opening a new business. You burn thru money quickly. What seems off is our first gas bill. For heating the shop (at a toasty 50 degrees) our first bill was $1200.00. Really? I have to work in an eskimo suit with heated socks. But in the end it will work out. I am really excited about the new shop and all of the vendors coming on board.

While I won’t be driving next year, I will be driving everyone nuts on and off the track. When your a driver it is hard to watch, but this is the year of DPR. I predict that Dina will be in the winner circle this season. We aren’t going to the race track to watch. We are going to win. I want our family, Marketing Partners, friends and fans  all in the winner circle with us. In 2015 you will see a new team, new look, new attitude and we are bringing our ‘A’ game. We have a lot of new things coming about in 2015 and it is going to be awesome. ‘Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee.’ or as Dina says ‘Drives like a Cadillac , stings like a V!’

2015 is going to be a great year. Look for the grand opening of Andi-Con Performance shortly. You are all more then welcome to join the fun at the open house we plan on having. We are testing  the boss’s Cadillac starts shortly and so does the strict diet and gym. 2015 is going to be a great year. Be on the lookout!

See you at the Races,

Andrew ‘Bam Bam’ Parise
