Athlete’s Voices: Dina Parise, Episode 7. Being Social: The good the bad, the obnoxious?

This one is a doozy! Have you guessed that I do not hold back? Read on!

Athlete’s Voices: Dina Parise Being Social: The good the bad, the obnoxious?

(January,2014)

Social : likely to seek or enjoy the company of others . Sounds easy enough, right? Well, now add the word Media to it. There you have it , Social Media.

Social Media: refers to interaction among people in which they create, share, and/or exchange information and ideas in virtual communities and networks.

If you go by the definition of Social Media, one would think it was all peace, love harmony and good recipes right? Well, not always.

Don’t get me wrong, I am a proponent of Social Media. It is for sure a great tool for everyone from Mom’s to moguls! I use it constantly for my Dina Parise Racing team for updates, pictures and just having constant interaction with fans and friends. No matter if it is the heat of racing season or the off season, I am sure to interact on Social Media. Staying connected in this day and age has become part of the fabric of our society.

It seems to me that the internet and Social Media has become the ‘Beer Muscles’ of our society. Since when do people find it appropriate to bash, make accusations and be just downright rude? I cannot even list the plethora of indiscretions users are prone to on a daily basis…..it would be impossible.

I absolutely get the fact that the world has changed in many ways. But frankly, haven’t we evolved as people? Last I looked; (for the most part) none of us are carrying giant clubs with scabs on our knuckles from them dragging on the ground. Besides, I’m not sure you can get Wi-Fi in a cave anyway.

As public figures we get the fact that there will be opinions about ‘us’, our performance, our teams etc.  Surely that is part of the ‘game’, whatever your ‘game’ may be. Does that give anyone be it fan or foe (public figures included) the right to sling personal attacks in a public forum? Eh, I think not.

I’m not talking trash talk…. I dig trash talk to help promote an event! My husband and I are rivals on the track. We are trash talkers from the get-go! Trash talking for the sake of a game or a race really makes people want to tune in. Taking it that step over the line to ‘attack mode’ to me is just plain disrespectful. I have heard personal attacks on fellow female drivers’ looks, as well as athletes’ children and families. Some things should be sacred. My favorite? That’s the Monday morning ‘Driver’. He or she are the Keyboard Champions that critique crashes as if they have ever driven a race car (no matter the series). Not sure what people get out of that, but I have seen it happen more often than I care to say.

Do I think the Cyber world will pay attention and it will be all peace and love? Uh, no. I’m far from naïve. My hope is that my diddy of a blog here will open a few eyes to the fact that we as adults have a responsibility to the younger generation. While we obviously cannot shelter the younger generation, I think we can and NEED to be Role Models.

Certainly cyber space is an amazing invention. A never-ending , non-physical form of communication. Sometimes that’s the problem. The non-physical part. It desensitizes us. It takes the ‘human’ out of ‘human beings’. Then we are just ‘beings’. So, therefore we do not treat one another accordingly.

My answer? Get off the computer, the IPhone the Tablet…whatever and get out ! Hit up a sporting event! Head out to an IHRA  Drag Race! It’s the best family fun, fan friendly event you will ever go to! Every ticket is a pit pass. Check out the cars up close! Meet the drivers (like me!). See the sights, smell the smell, and feel the raw power….. You for sure will want to FaceBook, Tweet or Instagram your friends, but I bet it will be just to make them get there too! #TeamDParise #DragRacing #PositiveVibes  !

Athlete’s Voices: Dina Parise, Episode 6. Can you CTS-V Me Now?

Growing up on Long Island, New York in an Italian family always had its advantages. There was the fact that a ‘rite of passage’ as a young woman in an Italian family was learning how to ‘perfect’ the family recipe for Gravy. Yes, I said Gravy. In my house growing up (and still today) if it’s red and has Meatballs, Pork Neck bones and Braciole … it’s Gravy! Veering from food, let us not forget about the ‘built in’ Body Guards of sorts; My three brothers. Being the youngest in an Italian family and the only girl led to many a scuffle and shall we say, dateless night. “Italian ‘Princess’ was a statement often used but misunderstood by many in my case. I was not the type to be a princess in a standoffish kind of way; I was merely a victim of overbearing brotherly love and protection. Once a ‘date’ found out who my brothers were, he usually had ‘other plans that did not include me!

Italians are a very distinct bunch. Proud of their heritage and sometimes it seems more proud of the food they create. One thing stands out about Italians (especially) in New York; many times you can pick them (Italians) out by the car they drive. For those of you not from the New York area this may seem strange, but it’s true! This takes us to the nitty gritty of this story.

Dina Parise Racing is proud to announce the build of a new Cadillac CTS-V by Matheis Race Cars Inc to debut in the 2014 season!  “We are very excited about building a new Pro Mod for DPR.” Stated  Rob Matheis. “We have been fans of DPR for a long time and can hardly wait to see Dina behind the wheel and winning races with a MRC built CTS-V!”

We are excited to be working with Rob and the MRC team! This is a sharp looking car and it will be built by MRC! What more could we ask for?

I think this is for sure what every girl needs…..a ‘Cherry Red’ 3,000 HP Cadillac CTS-V! Don’t you? This car is surely going to make a statement! Although…. I’m not sure I can figure a way to run at 240 MPH with the Italian Horn strapped to the chassis (considering the lack of a rear view mirror!) ! LOL! Well, we will see!

So stay tuned for future updates regarding the new CTS-V Pro Mod and the upcoming 2014 season!

From our DPR family to yours we wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy, Healthy, Prosperous New Year!

Athlete’s Voices: Dina Parise, Episode 5. From the General Lee to Monday Morning Quarterbacks!

(October,2013)

What a whirlwind I have been through in the past few weeks! Our Dina Parise Racing team has been busy hobnobbing with the best of ‘em!

Recently we made an appearance at (Ed Mangano’s) Nassau County Cruise to the Show. This was not your everyday car show. Day 1 (Saturday) consisted of a car auction and Day 2 was the show. (Early on Saturday I had the honor of interviewing George Barris King of the Kustomizers for an upcoming project). On day 2 , we were placed with our friends from the Autoseum.org (in association with Barris Kustoms). Early on Sunday I fulfilled many a childhood Dream! My friend Andy Parillo from the Autoseum allowed me to sit in all the movie cars! These are all originals too! Batmobile, Mach 5 (just call me Trixie!) and the General Lee. Not only did I get to do that, we spent the day with George Barris, Butch Patrick (Eddie Munster), and Sonny Shroyer (Enos Dukes of Hazzard). They all pitched in for our ‘Stop Write Here’ Project raising donations for Indy Honor Flight!

I digress for a moment…….If you recall in my prior posts I had crashed the car back in June. The nose of my ’63 Corvette Pro Mod is not yet painted so we decided to launch a fundraising Campaign for Indy Honor Flight. Turn a negative to a positive… (http://dinapariseracing.com/dpr-and-the-3-rs-racing-writing-and-the-radio ) This brings me to a point I really need to make. My disclaimer for this upcoming statement? None! I need to have this said for me and for my fellow racers. Did I crash the car? Um, it’s racing? I am not embarrassed of that, nor do I make excuses for it. In actuality, there were two; yes I said two mechanical malfunctions at once (refer to Episode 1) but I never really relayed that because why should I? In the moment of the ‘incident’ I did what I needed to do. I kept the car in my lane (keeping the other driver safe) and I kept the ‘shiny side’ up. It amazes me when I hear the plethora of ‘shoulda, coulda, woulda’s’ from people that have never even stepped foot in a race car, let  alone a 3,000HP beast. I have not just seen this with me of course; I hear it when other drivers have issues as well. Is it not bad enough that we tear our stuff up, then we need a ‘Monday Morning Quarterback’ telling us how to do our job? I am as positive as they come. I’m a ‘Suck it up Buttercup’ kinda gal ! But this past weekend, at a show…. I nearly lost it. Again we ran the fundraiser. Nose of the car still not yet painted, fans having fun signing it and donating to Indy Honor Flight. A guy comes to me and says, (laughing) “Do you drive one of these?” (My car being parked next to Andrew’s ’53 Pro Mod). I said, “Yes, I drive the one you are looking at.” His response “Maybe you should come back to the show when it’s painted.” Really? I proceeded to explain the fundraiser to him (politely) as he put his tail between his legs and walked away (cheapo didn’t even bother to donate, by the way). I will always keep a smile on my face peeps, but remember you all NEVER know what happens inside that car. It is a wild ride and we have a split mili-second to make the right decision. A simple ‘Glad you are OK’ will suffice. Drivers appreciate that way more than a driving lesson! Just a Public Service Announcement from lil’ ol’ me!

Next we had fun on Fox 5 Good Day NY with Rosanna Scotto and Greg Kelly.Pro Mods on 67th Street in Manhattan? Yes! Never in all my years would I think I would see New Yorkers stop in their tracks! Our cars created a buzz!

Here is Video clip 1 http://www.myfoxny.com/video?clipId=9395281&autostart=true and

Video clip 2 http://www.myfoxny.com/video?clipId=9395275&autostart=true .What do you think?

Racing season is about over. So we keep out there with appearances and fun stuff! No winter hibernation for us! I mention these two events, yet we had many more in between.

If that’s not enough, don’t forget my radio Co-Hosting gig every Monday night! All the info is on my Website……

For now we work on the 2014 season. Our DPR team is looking for additional Marketing Partners for the upcoming season. Do you think your business would be a good fit? Contact me and let’s chat!

Athlete’s Voices: Dina Parise, Episode 4. Give Them What They Want..

Let the Blogging fun continue….. Here you go!

Athlete’s Voices: Dina Parise, Episode 4. Give Them What They Want..

(September,2013)

Being a ‘sports’ personality , with an entertainment background (Ice Capades)  I have a tendency to look at what ‘we’ do from every angle. Drag Racing compares to any other sport to a fan from their perspective. When fans attend an event such as Drag Racing (or any other sport) they expect to be entertained. Seemingly not just by the ‘event’ itself, but by the ‘experience’. It seems the ‘experience’ part is lacking as of late.  If you do not ‘build it’ they will not come, right? Without fans we have nothing.

Fans want to feel they are part of the excitement! Now, of course they can’t sit with me in my 3,000HP Dina Parise Racing Corvette Pro Mod but you get the point! One of the great advantages of Drag Racing is the fact that every ticket is a ‘pit pass’! Fans are able to walk through the pit area, meet the drivers, get an autograph and be up close and personal with their vehicles. They can smell the fuel as the cars start up. They can watch as the crews work on the cars between rounds. All positive factors, yes! But we still need to go a step further. With all ages attending races we need to widen the appeal, that’s just my opinion of course, but I listen to the fans and that is what THEY are saying. Since they purchase the tickets, the schwag and the products that support us they are the ones we should listen to! Again, where will we be without the fans?

Somehow, ticket prices need to be affordable for an average family. In this day and age, not many families can afford ‘sports’ entertainment’ due to the high costs .If you do get in the gate, the prices once you get there are astronomical as well.  In some cases $9 for a hamburger? Come on people, that’s just nutty! I’m thinking fans don’t want to buy the actual cow…… just a thought. I said experience, not extortion! We need to keep it fan friendly!

I want to continue to do what I do for many reasons. I love driving a Race Car. Drag Racing is an amazing sport. Because we are up close and personal with our fans it creates more of a ‘comfortable atmosphere’. It allows us as a team to create amazing programs supporting various Veterans Charities. Take for instance the latest program initiative, the ‘Stop WRITE Here’ Program. After my unfortunate incident in June (refer to Episode 1 for details!), I decided to turn a negative to a positive and, began the ‘Stop WRITE Here’ Program shortly after. Fans are encouraged to sign the unpainted nose of my 63 Corvette and in turn leave a Donation for Indy Honor Flight http://www.indyhonorflight.org/  (Part of the Honor Flight Network). To date, DPR and its fans have assisted two Veterans in making the journey from Indy to DC! The project will continue until the nose is painted. Next stop for team DPR (we will be continuing ‘the Stop WRITE Here’ Project!) will not actually be a race but will be the Cruise to the Show at Eisenhower Park (East Meadow, NY) on Sept 28th and 29th.Check our DPR website calendar for details! http://dinapariseracing.com/

Aside from getting out there and racing, I have now added to the hustle bustle of this DPR team. I have taken on yet another role! Radio co-host! I am the new co-host of the Sam Auxier Jr. Radio Show. The show airs LIVE every Monday night at 7PM EST .For info go to my ‘On the Radio’ box on the DPR homepage! Log on and check it out!

Sometimes I feel like I’m on a one woman mission to change the world! I am passionate about everything I do. Can I change the world? Who knows! You should come back for Episode 5 and check my progress!

For now, I will keep it moving down the ¼ mile! Catch you all at the Top End of the track!

What IS and isn’t going on at DPR

Well, its another year and things have been crazier then ever. Where do I start? Ok… Here goes! Good friends of ours found us a shop in York PA were we moved the shop to the week of before Christmas. We thought it was going to be a permanent or semi permanent location … Well… ’til we received an email that they sold the building and we had to be vacate. Within a month. Oh, and by the way.. the shortest month of the year of course! It was a short lived reprieve, and once again we had to scramble to find another location. Thanks to Chip King we have a place in NC.
We bought a Ford F250 (Thanks to the fine people at Huntington Chevrolet in NY) and in one week I was able to put 7,600 miles on it! I did not think this would be possible to do. I gotta tell ya, when you bring you truck in for an oil change after one week of use people look at you weird. Dina and I had to go to NC to look at the shop. Notice I said Dina first, brownie points! I went from NY to PA on Wednesday to load up the shop, a friend followed me to NC where we dropped the Truck and trailer off.Whew….THEN….. We turned around and drove back to NY and left Friday night for Missouri, so Dina could get fitted for her NEW Cadillac CTSV. Some call me the Energizer bunny because I just keep going and going. We met up with Rob Matheis (Matheis Race Cars) at his shop and had NY style pizza in Missouri. Thats what they call it, I call it flat bread with stuff on it . It actually was pretty good though. Now we the major snow storm and ice storm is moving in, so we have high tail it out of Missouri and try and beat the storm. Well, we get to Indy and oh boy was it fun. When you don’t you see cars on the road it is a sign to get off the road. Now I have the Boss and Bella in the truck, so cargo is high priced right now and mistakes and it is going to cost me dearly. The road was a bit shiny I hit the tow button on the truck and it started to slide, yup the entire highway was covered in black ice. Well, I cut a .001 light hitting that button again let the truck straighten out and coasted all the way to the exit. But what pissed me off, the salt truck in front of us not putting any salt down. I think he saw the NY plate and had other ideas for me. I was so white, you could see me from space. We stopped for the night and hit the road the next day without any problems. It is nice to be home for a short period. But like they say the show must go on.

So, now it is order more parts for the boss’s car, that money tree in the backyard is so frozen it is only dropping pennies lately. Get the shop up and running this month and get back to some consistency in our lives. Poor Bella doesn’t know if she is coming or going, I forgot what month it is and what’s her name, the boss lady is just going crazy. We should have been testing in March, but it’s ok…. This is the Real husband of DPR and it IS reality at it’s finest ! YEP!. And, we wouldn’t want it any other way. Sounds good right? Another suck up! HA! Well, we have a lot to do in a short period of time, but it always seems to come together some how some way.

One big topic that is going on is the state of our sport of Drag Racing. Whit Bazemore wrote an article about it on Competition Plus and if you read it Whit states things have to change for Drag Racing to be here for the next 5-50 years. I wont get into it all, but all my life I have always dreamed of racing cars. Yes, I am guilty of the street racing back in the day. But this is a sport that compares to no other sport. There are only a handful of people who made a living from the sport and they are all idols in my eyes. We as Drag Racers need to bring that back, be the next idol. Bring our personalities back into the sport, have fun. Look at Tony Stewart how many times has he throw a helmet at another driver.Again this starts at the top, nobody wants to see a robot in front of the TV and say I want thank blah blah blah. You sound like the teacher from Charlie Brown, ” Wah,Wah,Wahhhh”. How about, “Damn, that thing was full of fire, I was scared out of my shorts!” John Force gets TV time because he is nuts, says stuff that has nothing relative to the race at times. You put the boss in front of a mic and watch out the show girl is coming to towm. I am a shy guy, we are like Pen and Teller sometimes.I’m Penn and she is certainly Teller! I am not big on being in the spot light, but when that chance comes I don’t plan on being a flap jack,I will be a big Whopper! Look out!

Well, its time to get a move on and see what type of trouble I can get into today. The boss already gave me three things to do and I forgot all three of them. Oh ya, one was get back to work. I think she means go back to Corporate America work. I’m not biting…….

Can you CTS-V me now?
